BetaGroup #11

Posted by claudio.capo on July 6th, 2009

betagroup1Last week I attended BetaGroup #11 and I was quite surprised. First of all by the amount of attendees. Second by the quality of the event and the participation of the audience and third by the start-ups presenting.

As an opener of the evening I saw a fantastic Dr. Patrick Georges. Dr. Patrick Georges being a brain surgeon came to talk about training and coaching managers of new businesses. Nothing boring but a fun speech on how to deal with human intelligence management. He gave some cool tips and tricks but at the end it all came down to a simple “Trust yourself, follow your guts and be natural”. (The presentation)

Fuck Facebook and have a nice day

Posted by claudio.capo on February 13th, 2009

I sometimes feel the same as Pablo Zárate. Nothing new is happening: everyday invites for useless games, crazy pictures posted (even worse when you are in it), video’s you can find on Youtube as well, pokes (which is nice sometimes), angry responses when you unfriend someone, etc….

Fuck Facebook and have a nice day.

Hell yeah, Facebook has some nice things as well. All of my connections of course. Birthday Calendar. How else can I remember your birthday. Facebook Connect, a great feature to integrate Facebook functionality in your projects. …

Maybe ‘Have a nice day’ was good enough.

Never miss a chance to say hi

Sao Paulo, Brazil

The short movie below, A Thousand Words from Ted Chung reminds me of the time I used to live in São Paulo. São Paulo, being one of the 5 largest cities in the world has about 20 million inhabitants.

One day a friend of mine said to me: “Never miss a chance to say hi, it might be your one and only chance in this huge city.“. The movie below made me think of that line.

TweetBacks

Tweetbacks

Tweetbacks (beta), a super service created by Dan Zarrella. It works in a similar way as trackbacks on your blog. The only difference is that it does not show trackbacks from other blogs but from Twitter. In other words a great way to follow conversations about your posts on Twitter.

Thumbs up for Dan.

Qwitter: track the ones that stop following.

Posted by claudio.capo on October 30th, 2008

With already so many applications build for Twitter, Qwitter must be an app for real Twitter aficionados and addicts. Qwitter sends you an e-mail whenever someone stops following you. It even tells you what the last tweet before your follor decided to quit following you. Talking about big brother.

Maybe Twitter should implement a personalized ‘I hate to see you leave’ message.

FOWA London 2008

Posted by claudio.capo on October 13th, 2008

Last week I and many others attended Future of Web Apps in London. A fantastic event. I learned many things, heard even more new things but there was more much more. Kevin Rose is great, Marc Zuckerberg is a real phenomenon in real life, Angels really can give a massage.

I’ll try to give a synopsis as how I enjoyed the event.

It all started on Thursday morning, flying in to London City, dropping of the bagage at the hotel and take a bus towards the venue. We were being warmly welcomed by people from ‘I love MySurch’, another event that took place at the same venue. They knew how to turn a smile on every one’s face.

After this it was straight towards the registration desk and heading towards Kevin Rose (Digg) speaking bout ‘The Future of News’. Perhaps it was too early for Kevin but I really could not understand what he’s up to with Digg. They’ll launch some new features soon related to personal recommended news. How it’s going to work it’s not clear to me but I fear this will lead to premier news providers that will massively start to produce news in certain content areas. This might influence certain areas of personified news interests aka ‘brainwashing’. Certain people working in marketing might abuse this system. This of course is just an assumption.

Social Networking for the ones that lived on a deserted island the past few years.

Posted by claudio.capo on January 13th, 2008

Or if you were unable to connect to the internet the past 2 years.
Or if you returned from the dead.
Or if internet suddenly becomes a main interest
Or if you get a strange mail saying: “…wants to add you as a friend” and you don’t know what to do …
… here is a clear definition from the guys from CommonCraft on what Social Networking is. Well explained in plain English.

Traffic jams & communicating with others

Posted by claudio.capo on December 6th, 2007

TrafficOver here in Belgium, and I am sure also elsewhere , traffic is a pain in the ass when you need to be on the road for professional duties. Especially when it rains. But today when I was stuck in traffic for about 17kms and saw all those people slowly passing by from the right and the left, I was wandering why there isn’t something easy to communicate with all those people. Trucks have intercoms so why can’t cars have tools to interact with others on the road? We have cell phones, pdas but as far as I know nothing that connects those in an easy way via some kind of technological platform. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a chat room while your are stuck in traffic?

Today I heard the same news on the radio for about 5 times. The same news over and over again on all stations, nothing new! Belgium isn’t that big so nothing much happens that’s worth to repeat over and over again. So it would be interesting to read or hear stories of companions on the road. Interact, share ideas, solve problems, get to know new people. A new form of social networking. No? Am I alone?

If someone has more ideas, shoot? If someone knows a tool, please share.

Update:
After some more Googling I did find something: Roadrave (roadrave.biz), a new driver-to-driver communication tool. Unfortunately the site does not exist anymore. But what I could find on line the concept should have been simple: get in touch and flirt with other drivers, by sending text messages and emails to anyone that takes their fancy on the road.

Endless senseless collaboration

Posted by claudio.capo on November 24th, 2007

Ever wanted to be part of something big but didn’t know how to get involved? And if you knew how would you participate? Well someone somehow made it easy for us all to be part of something big. Something endless, something senseless. But it’s a huge collaboration. In my bumble opinion the people at Write Something might be wrong about senseless in the title: “Endless Senseless Collaboration Book – Write Something“, because for one or another something will make sense.
